I have taken my time reading this amazing book. It is not one to read quickly. Once in a while a book comes along that becomes a part of you.so it is with me. These stories are those told by the saints in the Willie and Martin handcart companies, along with the Hodgett and Hunt wagon companies. Also included is a section with the Rescuers involved.
Be sure to have a highlighter with you as you read! There are so many inspiring stories. I suggest marking those that are favorites.

Reading this book without a pencil and paper is a major mistake. There is no way you can keep track of all the people in your small mind. Do yourself a favor and write down the names, ages, whether they lived or died and companies of those that stick out to you.
Here are a few of my faves:
Rescuers: Joseph Young, Cyrus Wheellock, Stephen Wells Taylor, Dan Jones (my favorite), Ephraim Hanks (second fave), George Washington Bean and so on.
I think you have to decide what ratio to use? How many names..more

Ok, I digress, I didn't read this entire book. It was suggested to me for preparation for trek but then I realized it's freaking text book sized and I decided to just read the stories of those we died at Rock Creek Hollow and some of the rescuer's to get their perspective. It's a huge book, not a fast read.

Here are the few first-hand accounts of members of the ill-fated Martin and Willie Handcart Companies of 1856 who recorded experience. Also included are accounts of their rescuers. Organized by company and then alphabetically by name, including both supportive and critical observations.
This collection was of particular interest to me, as my great great and great great great grandmothers were among the Willie Company, along with all their family. Their account was written by a sister/daughter and..more

I will admit I did not read this entire thing! It's text book huge! But I did read a ton of stories in it about certain men and women of the Willie Martin Handcart company that I was wanting to find more information about! It's got pictures and a million and one interesting stories! A great pioneer reference!
Since my husband and I are leaders of a faith quest this summer to Martin's Cove, WY I have been nightly pouring over this anthology of biographies on the pioneers who traveled by handcart. This is a must-read for every LDS person.
Read this book in preparation for Trek. So inspirational! Wanted to remember every one of their stories!! Great to learn about the obedience, faith, and love of the amazing people in the Willie and Martin handcart companies as well as the rescuers.
Amazing! Detailed accounts of Mormon pioneers who crossed the plains with the ill-fated Martin & Willie Handcart Companies. I loved how they were short accounts, one after another. I cried, I felt strengthened, I was inspired.
Great book. I love stories like this especially when they include what happened to the people involved in their later years. Highly recommend reading this book you won't be disappointed. Just be sure to keep tissues at hand.
This author is the lady I went to see when I went with Mary Pochin to learn about early LDS English history. She has a wealth of information. We talked to her for 4 hours! (And it wasn't even boring).

All those stories you need for a trek. So inspiring.
It is a great resource for finding out about a specific person. However, to just read through it is a bit of a slog, as there is so much repetition and overlap between the stories.

How To Tell My Story
Amazing collection of journal entries and letters from members of the Willie and Martin handcart companies, the Hunt and Hodgett Wagon trains, and the rescue parties from Utah.
I enjoyed the short bios included in this book. I also discovered I was related to a handful of them.
How hard the handcart pioneers really had it and how their faith grew in their extremities. Very powerful!
